Summary
This
product bulletin announces the October 2006 availability of the Data ONTAP
DSM 3.0 for Windows MPIO for First Customer Ship via NOW™ (NetApp on the
Web) and the November 2006 Quote Tool release. The Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 for
Windows MPIO (Data ONTAP DSM 3.0) is a device-specific module (DSM) to enable
NetApp FCP storage systems (and iSCSI systems in the future) to integrate with
Microsoft Multipath I/O in order to provide applications with high availability
to NetApp storage.
The Data
ONTAP DSM 3.0 is required with NetApp FCP
storage system configurations in which Windows hosts have more than one
physical path to the NetApp system. The Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 is a licensed host software–based
product that is customized and installed separately from other NetApp host
products such as FCP Windows Host Utilities and SnapDrive® for Windows. Sections
3.A and 4.B.4 of this product bulletin overview the supported host
configurations and customization structure, respectively. The Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 consists of:
·
Data ONTAP DSM Drivers that
are digitally signed by Microsoft (Windows 2003)
·
Data
ONTAP DSM Management (Microsoft® Management Console) Snap-in
·
Data ONTAP DSM Command Line
Interface
·
Data
ONTAP DSM Service
·
Note: The Data ONTAP DSM requires the use of Microsoft MPIO drivers
distributed by Microsoft as part of the supported Windows operating system.
2.
What's New?
A. Independent Data ONTAP DSM
Customization from SnapDrive for Windows
1)
Separation from SnapDrive for Windows
binaries
i.
The Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 is separate
from, and does not require, the SnapDrive for Windows binaries for its
multipath I/O operation. For configurations in which both MPIO and Snapshot™ management/LUN
provisioning are desired, the Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 is qualified for use with
SnapDrive for Windows 4.2 and later (see section 4.B.4).
ii.
The requirement to use the CIFS
protocol for security with multipath I/O configurations in which SnapDrive for
Windows 4.2 is not present has been eliminated.
B. Support for Intel® Itanium 64-bit
(IA64) Server Platforms
C. Functionality and Stability
Enhancements
1)
Support
for persistent preferred paths and administrator settings across reboots.
i.
The
previous NTAP DSM does not retain operator settings across reboots. The Data
ONTAP DSM 3.0 retains administrator path settings across reboots for each LUN
and will reuse that LUN and path combination on reboot, if available.
2)
Qualified
support for up to eight (8) active paths to NetApp storage.
3)
Enhanced
code modularity for supporting active/active load balancing policies with
future versions of the Data ONTAP DSM 3.x.
4)
Enhanced
path selection for better load spreading.
i.
The
Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 supports two load balance policies. By default, the Data
ONTAP DSM will select the optimal path based on the default load balance
setting.
1.
Failover:
Administrators set a preferred path that is always used unless there is a
failover or another inhibiting condition. Supported with or without Microsoft
Cluster Server (MSCS).
2.
Automatic:
The Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 selects the best path available, in the following
priority order:
a. Primary FCP paths
b. Proxy FCP paths
5)
Customized
retry intervals for error condition handling.
6)
Integrated
support for field troubleshooting and diagnostics.
i.
Event
Tracing for Windows: Enables enhanced log collection of development debug
messages at run time in production drivers without the need to provide support
personnel with special driver builds or to reboot hosts.

Ordering
1) The Data ONTAP DSM 3.0 is required with NetApp FCP
storage system configurations in which Windows hosts have more than one
physical path to the NetApp FCP storage system.
The Data ONTAP DSM is licensed on a per-physical-server basis.
2) The
FCP Windows Host Utilities 3.0 for Native OS (SW-FAK-WIN) qualified with Data
ONTAP DSM 3.0 is sold separately.
3) General configuration guidance:
i.
If
an FCP configuration is desired with SnapDrive 4.2 for Windows, then order FCP
Windows Host Utilities 3.0 (sold separately) and Data ONTAP DSM 3.0. See the
NetApp SAN Support Matrix for detailed configuration support.
ii.
If
an FCP configuration is desired with SnapDrive 4.1 (or earlier) for Windows,
then order FCP Windows Attach Kit 3.0 (sold separately) and NTAP DSM
(SW-MPIO-WIN) distributed with SnapDrive 4.1 (and earlier) for Windows. See the
NetApp SAN Support Matrix for detailed configuration support.
4) General part number guidance:
i.
Part
number SW-DSM-MPIO-WIN is used for new license purchases by new Data ONTAP DSM
customers. The Quote Tool will select this part number based on the user’s
response in the Quote Tool as to whether the Data ONTAP DSM was previously
purchased by the account.
ii.
Part
number SW-DSM-MPIO-WIN-INC is used for new license purchases after a Data ONTAP
DSM customer has purchased SW-DSM-MPIO-WIN. The Quote Tool will select this
part number based on the user’s response in the Quote Tool as to whether the
Data ONTAP DSM was previously purchased by the account.
iii.
Part number SW-DSM-MPIO-WIN-TOTAL is an aggregation
of existing and new Data ONTAP DSM licenses in a single license key to enable
customers and NetApp Global Services to track all Data ONTAP DSM licenses via a
single customer name and serial number.
iv.
Part number SW-SSP-DSM-MPIO-WIN-MKIT enables Data
ONTAP DSM 3.0 customers to procure future versions of the Data ONTAP DSM,
corresponding to the 12-, 24- or 36-month term of the SSP.

Upgrades
1) For
FCP configurations, the Data ONTAP DSM accepts existing NTAP DSM (SDR-MPIO)
licenses used with SnapDrive 4.1 for Windows and earlier.
2) Before upgrading to the Data ONTAP
DSM 3.0, customers must remove the previous NTAP DSM and SnapDrive 4.1 (or
earlier) for Windows LPSM feature.
i.
The
proper order of upgrade operations is the following:
1. Install
the Emulex or QLogic HBAs.
2. Install
the HBA drivers (available from the NetApp support page for Emulex and QLogic
at www.emulex.com/ts/index.html or http://support.qlogic.com/support/drivers_software.asp, respectively.
